This group is for people who are having issues with feeling shy and awkward in social situations and would like to meet like-minded people in a safe environment.

I had a fear of social situations for as long as he can remember, from being too shy to speak up in class, to being 18 and too afraid to attend university and feeling isolated and too nervous to find employment.

At the age of 19 I discovered that I was suffering with a condition called social anxiety disorder. It comes in many other names such as social phobia, social anxiety or avoidant personality, but they all mean the same thing, a fear of social situations.

Venue: Church Street Library, Community Space: (7-8pm Weekly)

Church Street Library.

From my own personal experiences, I know how challenging it can be for people to attend a support group.

So I would really like your help, in you finding your courage to come along, I am nervous too so don’t worry. Any questions, please email me.

  • Are you tongue-tied when trying to speak up in meetings?
  • Do you feel uncomfortable when you are asked questions on the spot?
  • Are you the one who sits passively in debates or discussions?

Then this is the group for you!

Part of Leading Light, this group is a step up from the Social Anxiety Support Group. In this group people are encouraged to participate in the activities that gently push you out of your comfort zone.
(It goes without saying, you can also opt out of any activity if you wish to do so)

The kind of activities we use at this group encourage speaking spontaneously on the spot when asked a question. However, there are many other activities and if you have a presentation you would like to practice on, then please do come along and practice within the group.

“If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.”

– Les Brown

So, in essence, taking a step forward and coming to this group, your comfort zone will grow and things that you once found difficult and become easier and easier.. It all starts with the first step!

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Thanks,
Steve

Leading Light presents: Sunflower Petals Female Self-Help Group

Date and Time: Monthly. Monday Evenings. 6:30pm (Please arrive early if possible)

Cost: £7 per person. (£1-£5 Concessions)

Location

TBC we are changing venues

This is a female only self-help group that is

  • Respectful
  • Supportive
  • Appreciative
  • Non-Judgemental
  • Friendly
  • Fun
  • Informative

Every session is created to give you more confidence being in the group, more understanding of social anxiety by learning and exploring new techniques of coping with anxiety, challenging those negative belief system we created as result. This is a self-help group and everyone is encouraged to share their experiences, good and bad ones. It is a safe place to just try and be yourself.

Some days towards the end of the session I will give little presentation on how Nutrition can help to support healthy brain function (there are always interesting and informative handouts provided to take home).

There won’t be any pressure of talking unless you want to. You can leave at any time if need be.

After the session, there is an opportunity to socialise in next door pub and plan group outings such as cinema, quizes, bowling, any suggestions welcome.

About me:

I have been suffering from social anxiety since I can remember.I have come a long way since I realised that what I have is called a social anxiety-which is about 7 years ago.

My main concern was a fear of blushing. Before I could not even say the word ‘blushing’ without actually turning purple on my face. It is not like that anymore. I still get anxious but I am more accepting of anxiety and I dont beat myself up for blushing and this in returns makes me less anxious.

Remember that everyone in the group will be very supportive and understanding.

Best Wishes

Selma

If you are thinking of coming to the group and you feel scared or if you have any questions please email me at selma@leadinglight.org.uk

Leading Light Speaking Workshop

Date and Time: Alternate Monday Evenings. 7:30-9pm (Please arrive early if possible)

Cost: £10 per person. (£7 Concessions)

Location

TBC We are changing venues

This is a fantastic opportunity for you (all levels welcome) to come and develop your public speaking skills and be comfortable about yourself in front of others.

This is an excellent workshop to really start challenging yourself and connect with others who are also in the same situation. If you are committed to overcoming your social anxiety then this workshop is for you.

My name is Liz, I am a university student and I have to give presentations as part of my course. I have had some bad experiences and almost gave up because of my fear of public speaking so I have decided to commit to setting up this workshop to overcome my fears and to encourage others to do the same. I am encouraging you to be bold and come along. I have completed Leading Light’s Leadership Empowerment Action Programme (LEAP) and will be one of the first few people to lead workshops to the Leading Light community.

Think of this workshop as a “laboratory” for public speaking and a chance to “experiment” with whatever you want to experiment with, without any consequence if you make mistakes. You can only gain by coming – practice makes perfect.

The intention of the workshop is to provide people with SA with a comfortable and encouraging environment to develop their public speaking skills and confidence.

Starts Monday 28th February 2011, 7.30 – 9.00PM

Cost £10 (Concessions £7)

The Agenda:

1. Introductions
2. Ice breakers/warm ups
3. Individual mini presentations about random topics
4. Group discussions on topics
5. Open discussion – anyone can choose a topic
6. Plan individual weekly challenge
7. Practice presentations – depending on if anyone wants to practice (please let me know if you have something or want to present something when you RSVP so I know.)
8. Feedback
